SASKATOON — An Edmonton man is facing a number of charges following his arrest as part of Project Shield, the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) retail crime blitz.
At about 8 p.m. on Dec. 18, police were called to a retail business in the 2300 block of 8th Street East on the city’s east side. A man had been apprehended by loss prevention officers on suspicion of shoplifting.
Further investigation by SPS officers found the man to be in possession of approximately three grams of cocaine and identification belonging to other persons.
The 40-year-old man is charged with theft under $5,000, possession of cocaine, obstruction and breach of a release order.
“As holiday activity increases in our city and retail spaces become busier, it’s important that every community member feels safe,” said Inspector Doug McNeil of the SPS Community Engagement Division. “By strengthening enforcement and collaboration with our retail partners, Project Shield is a commitment to ensuring retail spaces remain welcoming and retail crime offenders are held accountable.”
Working alongside store loss prevention officers and security personnel, SPS says they will focus on identifying and arresting prolific and violent offenders for a variety of crimes, including theft, weapons possession, breach of conditions, and to execute outstanding warrants.
