SASKATOON — Conexus Credit Union has issued a warning to its clients about ever-present scams, which are usually rampant during the Christmas season, and encouraged them to be vigilant, learn to protect themselves, familiarize themselves with the most common scams, and immediately report anything suspicious.
One of the scams is online shopping, where fraudsters create fake websites or social media ads that offer brand-name and popular gift items at huge discounts. Other scams are shipping texts and emails allegedly from legitimate delivery companies like FedEx, UPS, Amazon, or Canada Post, and emergency scams that usually target grandparents. Some are more sophisticated, like the charity scams, too-good-to-be-true offers, and fake e-transfers on online marketplaces.
Conexus added that they do not disclose externally how they respond to scam situations or assist their members, because fraudsters may use that information against their members.
“When members report scam attempts to us, we investigate and run our internal processes. We encourage members to report anything suspicious right away,” said Conexus in a statement.
They also warned the public that scammers might also take advantage of the upcoming merger between Conexus, Cornerstone, and Synergy, which takes effect on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026. The merger creates opportunities for scammers worldwide to defraud their clients and other residents of the province.
Conexus Chief Risk and Compliance Officer Mark Millham said scammers are already masquerading as Conexus and other financial institutions to defraud individuals.
“Unfortunately, we fully expect these scams based on our merger news to increase. That’s why we’re warning the public today ahead of the holidays and the legal merger integration date,” said Millham.
Conexus advised everyone to verify information, hang up on potential scam calls, and dial their customer centre. They added that they do not offer loan applications through social media. Other ways to protect yourself from scams include not entering your banking credentials anywhere except Conexus, Cornerstone, or Synergy digital banking platforms. They also advised clients to download the app or bookmark conexus.ca, cornerstonecu.ca, or synergycu.ca, create strong, unique passwords, and set up real-time alerts.
“Fraudsters are hunting for your banking credentials. They will manipulate the victims into lowering their guard. Watch out for pressure tactics, attempts to circumvent transaction processes and avoid clicking links,” Conexus added.
Conexus, Cornerstone, or Synergy members who believe they may have been victims of fraud or who encounter any fraudulent activity should contact their credit union and report the incident right away.
