The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit continues to investigate a shooting on Big Island Lake Cree Nation that resulted in a dangerous persons alert on Tuesday.
Police say no arrests have been made and investigators are actively working to identify and locate those responsible. RCMP confirm the deceased victim is a 31-year-old man. Formal identification is still underway with help from the Saskatchewan Coroners Service. Three other victims remain in hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.
The dangerous persons alert was issued at 8:23 a.m. after police determined there was a risk to public safety in the community and surrounding area. The alert was cancelled later that day at 4:49 p.m. RCMP say the decision was based on several factors, including that the incident was contained to one location and no further victims were found.
RCMP officers remain on Big Island Lake Cree Nation, supported by the Saskatchewan Marshals Service and the province’s Protection and Response Team, which are assisting with security and extra patrols.
Big Island Lake Cree Nation Chief David Sandfly expressed sympathy for those affected and urged residents to help police by sharing any information they may have. Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP at 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS.
