REGINA – Sask Power has announced it has applied for rate hikes in 2026 and 2027.
SaskPower confirms in a news release that it is seeking a 3.9 per cent rate increase effective Feb. 1, 2026, and a further 3.9 per cent rate increase effective Feb. 1, 2027. The company will be making that rate application to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel, with the Feb. 1, 2026 increase to be implemented on an interim basis but still subject to the rate review process.
Sask Power said it needs the additional funding to support "record capital investments and continue providing reliable power for the people, businesses and communities of Saskatchewan," according to their statement.
Reliability and energy security are top priorities, and SaskPower will continue to make the necessary investments to ensure power is available for all customers whenever it is needed. In the coming years, SaskPower will continue to revitalize its fleet of coal-fired power plants, expand its transmission and distribution systems, and modernize the provincial grid.
“Utilities across Canada continue to face considerable rate pressures, and SaskPower is no exception,” said Rupen Pandya, SaskPower President and CEO in a statement. “We will continue to pursue a strategy of balancing the need for moderate rate increases with our required capital investments to maintain reliability for customers.”
According to Sask Power the average residential customer will see increases of $5/month in 2026 and $5/month in 2027, while average farm customers will see increases of $11/month in 2026 and $11/month in 2027. This is SaskPower’s first rate increase in three years, the most recent being four per cent each in 2022 and in 2023.
The news comes the same day that SGI announced it is also seeking rate increases from the Rate Review Panel.
In a statement, Opposition Leader Carla Beck has condemned the government over the rate increases.
She said Saskatchewan residents struggling with the cost of living are now "going to face increases on both their home power bills and their car insurance. We warned the Sask. Party of the impact these increases would have over and over during the Fall Sitting and they ignored us — and downright lied on multiple occasions, stating there wouldn’t be increases.
"These increases from SaskPower and SGI are just the beginning of what is a full-on fiscal trainwreck from an incompetent Premier and Ministers who are clearly out of ideas and have forgotten who they serve."
