REGINA – 2025 was a big year of breaking news in business, with a lot of major stories impacting Saskatchewan.
From major projects to sale and merger announcements, 2025 saw its share of activity with many of those same stories continuing on into 2026. A major story that dominated business news coverage throughout the year was the impact of tariffs imposed by the United States, China and India on various products important to Saskatchewan. Steel was particularly hard-hit and it was activity in that sector that particularly made headlines in 2025.
Here is a look at just some of the stories SaskToday covered in 2025 on the business beat.
Evraz Steel sold to Atlas Holdings Ltd.
The big news story impacting steel manufacturing in the province was completion of the sale of Evraz North America to US-based Atlas Holdings Ltd. out of Connecticut. The Regina plant as well as the Alberta operations were renamed Interpro Pipe and Steel and a ceremony was held in the fall to restore the goose logo to the plant from its former Ipsco days.
Bunge takes over Viterra
Another sale that made major headlines was the completion of the takeover of Viterra Ltd. by Bunge Global SA in July. The merger had been controversial with many farmer groups worried about the impact consolidation would have, but SaskToday later reported the merger had seen a smooth transition.
As well, at REAL District the Viterra International Trade Centre was renamed the Bunge International Trade Centre to reflect the changeover.
Foran's McIlvenna Mine project
In response to President Donald Trump's tariffs came a renewed focus by Canadian leaders of advancing major projects of national importance. A new Major Projects Office was created at the federal level and one of the first five projects to be announced was the McIlvenna Bay Foran Copper Mine Project located west of Creighton.
That will include an underground mine and a processing facility above ground. The province has said the processing facility will have capacity of 4,900 tonnes per day of ore producing copper, zinc, gold and silver over an initial 18-year mine life.
Conexus merger approval
A major mega-merger in the province's credit union sector made headlines in 2025. Members of Conexus, Synergy and Cornerstone Credit Unions voted yes to merge those three into one single entity. Soon after, it was announced the name of the new combined entity will be Conexus Credit Union, due to start operations in 2026.
United direct flights to Denver
Regina business travellers finally saw the long awaited return of direct flights to Denver, as United Express and their partner SkyWest Airlines launched daily direct service to the airport. The return of the route was welcomed by local business and tourism leaders.
