WEYBURN — Members of the Weyburn Police Service (WPS) are investigating after two flights from police in early 2026.
According to the WPS, in the early morning of Jan. 1, police observed a white Land Rover operating without headlights. When emergency lights were activated for a traffic stop, the vehicle failed to halt, proceeded through a red light and continued eastbound on Highway 39 at a high rate of speed.
Due to public safety concerns, the WPS said police did not pursue the vehicle but a licence plate was obtained. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
Members handled another flight from police incident in the early morning hours of Jan. 3. The WPS said members observed a black Ford Bronco driving erratically. At the same time, police had received a public complaint regarding the vehicle’s dangerous driving behaviour.
Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop and continued to drive in a manner that the WPS said posed a risk to public safety. Police discontinued the pursuit and an investigation is ongoing.
Police conducted enhanced patrols throughout the community on New Year’s Eve, including a visible presence at licensed establishments. According to a news release, officers assisted in diffusing several disputes both inside and outside drinking establishments, and ensured patrons were able to get home safely. The WPS said it was pleased with the overall co-operation received from businesses and the public throughout the night.
The WPS says it also responded to numerous minor traffic collisions throughout the week from Dec. 28-Jan. 4, largely due to what the police described as icy road conditions. Several hit-and-run incidents were also reported. Police remind drivers to adjust their driving to road conditions and to remain at the scene of any collision as required.
The WPS reported responded to 65 calls for service from Dec. 28-Jan. 4.
