I remember as a kid my parents getting really excited to see the great Don Williams at the Conexus Arts Centre many years ago. I’m talking the late 1990’s here when it was still called the “Centre of The Arts”. I’m estimating it was around 1998 specifically. They asked if I’d like to go and I said absolutely not! “He’s boring,” I said. Keep in mind I was only about 12 years old at that time. I liked Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Lorrie Morgan, Reba, George Strait, etc….not Don Williams.
Well, as I got older and actually listened to his music I started to realize I am a HUGE Don Williams fan. I learned to have an appreciation for his music and for his voice that could completely relax you as he takes you back in time. His voice in “Good Ole Boys Like Me” paints such a great picture in one’s mind of where the story takes place and what’s going on. It doesn’t take long until one instantly realizes how good Don Williams really is.
Once I became hooked I couldn’t wait to see Williams live but, unfortunately, that never happened. He passed away the weekend of the CCMA’s in Saskatoon in September of 2017. I always regretted not going when I had the chance but we’re all thankful his music will live on for generations to come.
