REGINA — The Regina Police Service (RPS) added four new alternative response officers (AROs) to its force this week.
The AROs are special constables who form half of the Downtown Safety Team (DST), working alongside eight sworn police officers. Their role is to support public safety in situations where an armed response is not required, focusing on prevention, connection and community support.
Their duties include building relationships with downtown community members, supporting investigations, and connecting people with social resources.
RPS reported that in 2025, the Downtown Safety Team responded to 3,868 calls for service, transported 535 people to the complex needs facility, participated in 197 community events and meetings, and made 3,703 contacts with businesses.
The four new AROs join nine existing special constables on the team.
RPS says the expansion will allow for increased daily and weekly coverage, strengthening the downtown presence with a focus on crime prevention and safety.
