Friday, January 9th is Law Enforcement Day where people take a moment to recognize the challenges associated with those who are tasked with protecting us. It’s also a day to celebrate the good work officers do in our communities and to share positive experiences about dealing with various police forces, including Regina Police Services.
In the Queen City this week, several new Alternative Response Officers (ARO) were sworn in by Regina Police Chief Lorilee Davies to help bolster downtown officer numbers. The role of Alternative Response Officers is to assist regular police officers in situations where an armed response is not required. According to Regina Police Service, they are a team of constables who focus on preventions, connection, and community support.
Four new ARO’s were added to the downtown safety team this week, bringing the total number of special constables to 13. Eight police officers are also on the downtown safety team, making up 21 law enforcement officials dedicated to assistance and dealing with various situations in Regina’s heart.
Statistics released by Regina Police Services indicate the Downtown Safety Team is needed in the city due to the volume of calls made in the past year. In 2025, 3,868 calls for service were made, 535 people were taken to the Complex Needs Facility, 197 community events and meetings were attended by officers, and they connected with various businesses over 3,700 times.
