REGINA — Regina Catholic Schools (RCS) is receiving 10 new relocatable classrooms to address overcapacity.
On Wednesday, the provincial government confirmed 39 new relocatable classrooms across eight school divisions, including RCS.
Twylla West, communications and media coordinator for Regina Catholic Schools, said multiple schools within the division are currently over 100 per cent capacity.
“So, we really needed to address things in a few areas to ensure we had a bit more space.”
The 10 relocatable classrooms will be split between Michael A. Riffel Catholic High School (4), St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School (2), Saint Gabriel School (2), and St. Theresa School (2).
Between this year and last year, RCS has added 34 relocatable classrooms.
West acknowledged “some pressures throughout the city in the east and the southeast area” for students in those areas.
On the southeast side of Regina, a new joint school between RCS and Regina Public Schools is currently under construction to relieve capacity issues.
However, construction on the school won’t be completed until 2027.
In the meantime, West said RCS is busing people from Harbour Landing to different schools.
West also noted plans to build a new joint-use elementary school in The Towns neighbourhood, but a timeline for construction hasn’t been announced yet.
Regina Catholic School currently serves 14,359 students as of January 1.
West said they saw an approximate increase of 250 students from last year.
“That's the overall population of an elementary school, a smaller elementary school.”
While schools are facing over-capacity, West made it clear that RCS isn’t in any bad position.
The province said the new classrooms will be installed in the summer ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.
