WEYBURN — The Weyburn Police Service handled calls for mischief, mental health and driving issues during the first full week of 2026.
On Jan. 6, police received a report of mischief at a local hotel that damaged a window. A man was detained at the scene and transported to the Weyburn police station for further investigation.
While being interviewed, the WPS said the man became aggressive, challenged police members and damaged a garbage can at the police station. He was restrained, charged with mischief related to both the hotel and the police station, and later remanded into custody to appear in court.
No further details were immediately available.
Police responded to a report Jan. 5 of a vehicle striking a business in Weyburn. Upon arrival, the WPS says it determined a vehicle had accidentally backed into the building, causing extensive damage to both the structure and the vehicle. No injuries were reported and the driver was charged.
Members received a report Jan. 9 of stolen Milwaukee tools from a work truck that had been parked at a local dealership for repairs. The approximate value of the stolen tools is $1,500. The WPS says an investigation is ongoing.
The WPS responded for 63 calls for service from Jan. 4-11. It said it responded to an above-average number of mental health and wellness-related calls. On numerous occasions, individuals were transported to the hospital for further care.
Police also conducted numerous traffic stops in response to increased complaints for erratic driving. On two occasions, drivers provided roadside breath samples resulting in warnings on an approved screening device and were issued 72-hour driving suspensions.
