SASKATOON — A 72-year-old Saskatoon man is facing multiple charges following a police investigation into a series of payroll frauds.
In each of the reported incidents, dating back to 2023, complainants reported having hired an accounting business to assist with payroll, and later were notified of arrears and interest owed to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). An investigation, including a forensic audit, revealed that the suspect misappropriated payroll remittances to the CRA for more than $250,000.
The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Section charged Rene Stock with five counts each of theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000.
Stock appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court on Jan. 13.
Police advise that prior to seeking payroll and accounting services, the public should verify the credentials of the individual/business and search the business name online and review any available ratings or complaints, including a search of the Better Business Bureau.
