Man dies in collision near Fort Qu’Appelle, HW 10 remains closed

FORT QU'APPELLE — Update, Jan. 15, 2:14 p.m.:  Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP are investigating a fatal collision near Fort Qu'Appelle.

On Jan. 14, at around 6:50 p.m., Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP received a report of a collision on Highway 10, west of Fort Qu’Appelle.

The investigation determined a propane truck and a semi collided. A pick-up truck then left the roadway and entered the ditch to avoid a secondary collision.

The driver of the propane truck was declared dead by EMS at the scene. He has been identified as a 73-year-old man, from Fort Qu’Appelle. His family has been notified.

The drivers of the other vehicles did not report injuries to police. None of the vehicles had passengers.

It was determined the propane tanker was leaking. A safety perimeter was set around the site and the propane is being safely removed from the area.

Once that is complete, a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist will continue the investigation.

It’s anticipated the highway will be closed until later hours of Jan. 15. Traffic is being re-routed in the area and motorists should expect a delay. Police say they do not have an estimated time the highway will re-open, but encourage motorists to consult the Highway Hotline for road closure updates.

Police say they are anticipating high winds, and potentially snow, this afternoon. Please slow down and use caution as you approach the area.

Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of the collision reconstructionist.

Original post, Jan. 15, 9:20 a.m.: Highway 10, west of Fort Qu'Appelle remains closed due to a serious collision.

Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP are still at the scene of a serious collision that occurred on Highway 10 west of Fort Qu’Appelle on the evening of Jan. 14.

Propane was spilled as a result of this collision and crews continue their work to clean up the area.

The highway is closed to traffic and detours are in place.

The clean up is anticipated to take the majority of the day. That timeline is subject to change and motorists are encouraged to consult the Highway Hotline for road closure updates.

At this time, police say they have no further updates to release regarding this collision. It remains under investigation.
