REGINA — Ukrainian culture will take centre stage Jan. 24 as the Tavria Ukrainian Folk Dance Ensemble and School of Dance hosts its Ukrainian New Year Gala at the Regina Performing Arts Centre.
Known as Malanka, the celebration marks the Ukrainian New Year with an evening built around food, dance and community. Guests will enjoy a full supper, live performances by Tavria dancers, and a high energy zabava that turns the night into a full scale cultural celebration. Silent auctions and raffles add to the excitement, while helping to raise critical funds for the organization.
“Malanka is really about welcoming in the new year together,” said Tarilynn Tymiak, a board member with Tavria. “It’s a fun night with great food, performances, dancing, and a chance to be with friends and family while celebrating Ukrainian culture.”
The gala is one of Tavria’s most important fundraising events of the year. Proceeds go directly back into cultural programming, including dance workshops, costuming, choreography and training that allow the organization to preserve and share Ukrainian heritage in Regina.

“We put a lot of care into doing this the right way,” Tymiak said.
For many involved with Tavria, the event carries deep personal meaning. The organization includes members with direct ties to Ukraine, alongside others who have grown up dancing or volunteering within Regina’s Ukrainian community.
“It’s important to honour our culture and share it with people who may not be familiar with the Ukrainian New Year,” Tymiak said. “Especially right now, supporting Ukraine and keeping the culture strong here at home really matters.”
While the night is rooted in tradition, it is designed to be welcoming to everyone. Guests can attend the full evening or join just for the performance and dance portion.
“Everyone is welcome,” Tymiak said. “You don’t need to know anything about Malanka. It’s a great way to learn, celebrate, and have a really fun night.”
