In 1976, the government took over the potash industry in Saskatchewan, creating Potash Corp of Saskatchewan as a crown corporation. This generated debate both politically and in the business community as some business groups were opposed.
PCS started with very humble beginnings in its first fiscal year from 1976 to 77. By the end of that time, the company had acquired two mines, the Duval Mine and the Sylvite Mine, renamed the Corrie Division and the Rokanville Division respectively, and had increased its production capacity from zero to the second largest producer in North America with over 540,000 tons. PCS merged with Agrium to form Nutrien in September of 2016 and remains based in Saskatchewan.
