REGINA — Carmichael Outreach temporarily closed Monday morning after a pepper spray discharge inside the building around 9 a.m., prompting a short shutdown to allow for cleanup and ventilation.
Director of Development Janice Miller said everyone inside the building was safe, but precautions were necessary because the spray was released in an enclosed space.
“Everyone is okay,” Miller said. “Anytime something like this happens indoors, the fumes are the biggest concern. Our priority is always the safety of our staff and our guests.”
The outreach centre closed for several hours while crews aired out and cleaned the space. Miller said staff worked quickly so services could resume as soon as possible, especially given the cold temperatures.
She said they plan to reopen at noon for lunch service, so no meals are missed.
“A lot of people depend on that meal service,” Miller said. “We’re grateful to have a strong team that came together right away so we could reopen and continue helping people who need a warm place today.”
Miller called the incident unfortunate but said the response ensured the building was safe before welcoming people back inside.
