REGINA — The City of Regina is preparing to upgrade drainage pipes in the Heritage neighbourhood.
On SaskTenders, the city has put out a Negotiated Request for Proposal (NRFP) for Phase 1 of the Heritage Drainage Upgrade (HDU) Project.
“We're investigating options to upgrade the underground infrastructure within the heritage neighbourhood. So right now our primary focus will be along 9th Avenue, around Winnipeg Street and Saskatchewan Drive,” said Evan Guenther, City of Regina director of sustainable infrastructure.
Guenther said the project intends to reduce the risk of flooding for residents in the area with outdated pipes.
“[This neighbourhood] was built with older design standards, and it's in its undersized infrastructure. So it is susceptible [place], [as] these houses are susceptible to sewer backups. And yeah, it's a problem that we tend to resolve with this project.”
Guenther alluded to how the city’s soil conditions and drastic changes in temperatures play a role in infrastructure aging.
The city is upgrading drainage water pipes as part of its drainage master plan. This includes upgrades in Northeast Regina, Al Ritchie, and North Central.
The HDU project will take place over multiple phases, said Guenther.
As part of the first phase, construction will have minimal traffic disruption to Winnipeg Street and Saskatchewan Drive, according to the project’s description.
“Two lanes of Winnipeg Street and Saskatchewan Drive (one lane each direction) must remain open at all times,” notes the city in its NRFP.
The city will utilize its utility funds to complete the project.
No timeline for the project was given.
