LIVE BLOG: 2025 Vanier Cup – Saskatchewan Huskies vs. Montreal Carabins

Carabins are in the victory formation, and Montreal is the 60th Vanier Cup champion, their second in the last three years.

4:22 p.m.
Two incomplete passes and a short run by Frank and it's a turnover on downs at the Huskies 18.

4:17 p.m.
Couple of short runs and Montreal is punting from the Huskies 51 with 43 seconds remaining. Sask gets the ball on their own 10 with 31 seconds to play.

4:15 p.m.
Farrell is sacked for a big loss on third down and it's Montreal ball on the Sask 55 with 1:14 remaining in the game.

4:12 p.m.
Saskatchewan at third and five at midfield with 1:47 remaining and they covert. Gonzalez is the Nike Player of the Game, by the way, and extremely well deserved.

4:09 p.m.
Huskies get ball on own 34 to start next drive.

4:05 p.m.
Touchdown Montreal. Gonzalez stands strong in the face of a blitz, Larose beats his man and hails in the ball in the end zone. 30-16 Montreal with 2:22 remaining in the game. That's three majors for the true freshman, two of them to Larose.

4:04 p.m.
Montreal converts on a third-and-one and have a fresh set of downs at the Sask 7.

4:00 p.m.
Carabins overcome a couple of penalties, including a first and 22, to get into the red zone at the Huskies 12 with 3:44 remaining. A two-yard run gets up to the 10 at the three-minute warning.

3:51 p.m.
Incomplete pass and sack by McDougall and Riders are punting from their goalline. Carabins ball on the Saskatchewan 44.

3:46 p.m.
Hundeby gets to Gonzalez on second down for his second sack, roughing penalty is tacked on and Carabins are punting from own 39 with 10 minutes remaining. Huskies start the drive from their own 14 needing to get something going on offence.

3;45 p.m.
Interception Montreal. Miessan reaches back to intercept a pass intended for Wiebe, Carabins ball at the Huskies 51. That's a pretty big blown opportunity, folks.

3:43 p.m.
Montreal concedes the safety to make it 23-16 and a one-score game, Huskies get the ball back 

3:40 p.m.
Short pass and a sack by Hundeby and Carabins are punting from their own end zone with 11:58 remaining in the game.

3:36 p.m.
Stuffed screen pass, penalty makes is second and 17, Franks runs for 10 before taking a huge hit, Huskies punt and get the ball on their own 18 after a penalty. Huskies need to get something going pretty quick.

3:32 p.m.
Huskies get the ball at their own 33 to start their next drive.

3:30 p.m.
Touchdown Montreal. Gonzalez throws a deep ball to the endzone for Dosso and he beats his man on a jump ball for the major. Six plays, 89 yards, 2:58 off the clock and the Carabins have a 23-14 two-score lead at the end of the third quarter.

3:35 p.m.
A 23-yard sideline pass to Larose and roughing the passer penalty and Montreal is up to the Sask 30.

3:23 p.m.
That's where things stall on this drive, Huskies are punting from their own 53. Montreal gets the ball on their own 21 after the punt and penalties.

3:18 p.m.
Wiebe has a 23-yard catch in coverage on second down to get up to midfield.

3:16 p.m.
Carabins get up to midfield and face a third and two, decide to punt. And wouldn't you know it, it's a 58 yard punt and another rouge. These single points might end up deciding this whole thing. 16-14 Montreal with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter.

3:09 p.m.
Drive stalls after short pass and incomplete pass to Flory on the goalline. 32-yard field goal attempt by Scott is good, 15-14 Montreal with 7:45 remaining in third quarter. Methinks we have a ball game here, folks.

3:07 p.m.
Piccinin hauls in a pass and goes for a run up to the Montreal 28 on the first play of the drive.

3:05 p.m.
Three plays and a couple penalties and Montreal is punting. Sask gets the ball on their own 20, unnecessary roughness penalty moves the ball up to the 35 with 9:51 left in the third quarter. Defences have come to play in the second half.

2:58 p.m.
Stuffed run by Frank and short pass to Piccinin and Huskies are punting. Carabins ball on their own 36.

2:56 p.m.
Gonzalez tries a couple deep passes but both go off receivers hands, Montreal punting from Huskies 48. Sask gets the ball back on their own 17 with 13:03 left in third quarter.

2:54 p.m.
Two complete passes and Carabins are up to midfield.

2:52 p.m.
Montreal has the ball from heir own 32 to start the second half.

2:32 p.m.
Pass left to Drolet is stopped by Scheck at the Riders two, eight seconds left in the half and Boyer is kicking a nine yard field goal on the final play of the half. It's good and Montreal has a 15-11 lead at halftime.

2:29 p.m.
A run right is stuffed at the five, Montreal second and goal with 13 seconds left after a timeout.

2:28 p.m.
Larose makes a leaping catch in traffic along the sideline for 23 yards forn to the Riders seven with 43 seconds left in the half.

2:27 p.m.
Gonzalez scrambles on second down and is at least two yards over the line of scrimmage when he throws a complete pass to midfield, but the officials call no penalty after a brief meeting. Carabins catch a break, and one-play later a 29 yard run by Larose gets Montreal up to Sask 27 with 1:06 remaining. 

2:22 p.m.
Frank tackled for a loss, incomplete pass and Huskies are punting. Ball goes out of bounds at the 22 after a near block. Montreal ball with 2:35 to play in the first half.

2:18 p.m.
Two runs by Frank and a 12-yard catch by Wiebe and the Huskies are up to the Montreal 53 at the three-minute warning.

2:15 p.m.
Gonzalez gets things rolling on the next drive, but drive stalls at the Sask 32. Boyer has a 39-yard field goal attempt, wide low left but through the end zone for another rouge. 12-11 Montreal with 4:35 left in the half.

2:08 p.m.
Scott gets off a 85-yard kick through the end zone and it's a rouge. 11-11 tie with 8:28 left in the fiist half.

2:04 p.m.
TOUCHDOWN HUSKIES! What a response! Frank bulldozes in from four yards out right up the middle. Convert is good, nine plays 82 yards, five minutes, 11-10 Montreal with 8:28 left in the first half.

2:01 p.m.
Jule has a second-down catch for 13 yards to for first and goal Huskies at the four.

2:00 p.m.
Franks has a huge 18 yard carry through a bunch of tackles and Sask is in the red zone at the 16.

1:59 p.m.
Offside penalty and catch by Jule and Huskies are at the Montreal 33.

1:57 p.m.
Lennea has a 19-yard catch to get over midfield and up to the Montreal 51. 

1:53 p.m.
Speaking of that deep pass being there… Touchdown Carabins. Gonzalez finds Gourgon for a diving 41-yard catch in the Huskies end zone. Eight plays, 75 yards, four minutes off the clock, 11-3 Montreal with 13:30 left in the second quarter.

1:48 p.m.
Montreal goes for it on third and one from the Sask 43, and it looks like it's close. Measurement, and it's good by the length of the football. Drive continues.

1:43 p.m.
Gonzalez has overcooked a couple of deep passes, if he dials in that range there might be a big play or two coming. Anyway, couple of short completions and Carabins are up to midfield as the first quarter ends. 4-3 Montreal leading.

1:39 p.m.
Wiebe catches 15-yard pass to get up to Montreal 20, and a bobbled snap still results in a five yard carry for Farrell. Scott has a 20-yard field goal, it's good, 4-3 Montreal with 2:08 left in first quarter.

1:36 p.m.
Check down pass to Frank gains 14 yards and penalty pushes Huskies up to midfield, 26 yard pass to Piccin and they're at the Montreal 35.

1:30 p.m.
Drive stalls at the Sask 17 and Boyer hits a 24-yard field goal, 4-0 Montreal with six minutes left in the first quarter.

1:29 p.m.
Runs for 11 by Dosso and 24 by Dembele and Carabins are up to the Huskies 24.

1:25 p.m.
Farrell is sacked on second down, Huskies punt from own 45 and Montreal gets back on own 51 after the punt. 8:20 left in the first quarter.

1:23 p.m.
Whoa, that was close. Huskies go for it on third down from their own 41, and if not for a second effort by Wright and the pile, they might not have got it. Still a first down, though, drive continues.

1:21 p.m.
Couple of completions to Lennea and Huskies are out of the shadows of their goalposts up to their own 28.

1:20 p.m. 
No damage done, though, as a short pass and incompletion and Carabins are punting. Riders get the ball back on their own five after the return is initially bobbled. 12:55 left in first qurter.

1:18 p.m.
Well, that's a less than ideal start. Gauthier intercepts Farrell's first pass on the first play and it's Montreal ball on their own 42.

1:17 p.m.
And just like that, we've got a rouge on the kickoff and it''s 1-0 Montreal with 15 minutes to play in the first quarter.

1:14 p.m.
Teams are taking the field, Montreal won the coin toss, Saskatchewan is getting the ball first, and we're seconds away from kickoff!

It's looking to be a beautiful day for late-November football, with the temperature at 5 C for the 1 p.m. kickoff. It'll mainly sunny all afternoon, with winds not too much of a factor out of the west at 15 km/h.

The entire USports football season has come down to this.

It’s the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. It’s the University of Montreal Carabins. It’s the 2025 Vanier Cup from Mosaic Stadium in Regina!

The Huskies have had a spectacular season, heading into the championship game with a 10-1 record overall. They finished with a 7-1 record at the top of the Canada West, then reeled off a three-game winning streak in the playoffs to advance to the Vanier Cup. That included a 26-7 win over the University of British Columbia in the Canada West semifinal, 25-24 win over the University of Regina in the Hardy Cup Canada West final, and 22-11 victory over Queen’s in the Mitchell Bowl USports semifinal.

Jake Farrell gets the start at quarterback for Saskatchewan, having completed 58 of 95 passes for 647 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions for a 139.7 quarterback efficiency rating.

There’s little question who the Huskies will be playing for in this contest, though, and that’s the player Farrell took over for in mid-season — quarterback Anton Amundrud. Amundrud had 1,641 yards passing and 14 touchdowns in the first five games before stepping away from the team, and it was later revealed that Amundrud has been battling lymphoma. The Huskies community has since rallied around their fallen leader, with a GoFundMe having raised more than $60K as of this writing.

Ryker Frank leads the Saskatchewan ground game with 97 carries for 723 yards and three touchdowns, while Daniel Wiebe topped the receiving corps with 60 catches for 926 yards and 11 touchdowns. Dawson Lennea and Thomas Jule will also be popular targets, with Lennea having 28 catches for 376 yards and 11 touchdowns, Jule 21 catches for 301 yards and a single major.

Linebacker Jacob Goldstone led the Huskies with 56 tackles and seven sacks, while fellow linebacker Seth Hundeby had 41.5 tackles and six sacks. The duo also led the team with two interceptions apiece.

The Carabins put together a 6-2 record in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) division, finishing in second place behind the Laval Rouge-et-Or. The Carabins got hot at the right time, though, opening the playoffs with a 51-2 win over Concordia in the RSEQ semifinal before getting a last-second field goal miss to defeat Laval and win the Coupe Jacques Dussault. That sent Montreal into the Uteck Bowl USports semifinal, where they’d blow out Saint Mary’s 49-19 to book their spot in the Vanier Cup.

Pepe Gonzalez gets the start at quarterback for Montreal and has had a solid season, completing 151 of 227 passes for 2,284 yards 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions for a 171.6 quarterback efficiency rating.

Lucas Dembele is the Carabins’ top ball carrier, rushing 65 times for 447 yards and a touchdown while fullback Mathieu Barsalou has been a goalline force and leads with five majors on the ground.

Enrique Jaimes-Leclair tops Montreal with 29 catches for 578 yards and four touchdowns, Hassane Dosso hauled in 26 passes for 393 yards and three majors. Brandon Gourgon also had three touchdown catches. 

Charles-Elliott Bouliane leads the Carabins with 33 tackles, with fellow linebacker Mohamed Eishal not too far behind with 30 tackles. Defensive linemen Gabriel Maisonneuve and Mukendi Mutombo had 4.5 and 4.0 sacks apiece, Harold Miessan was tops with two interceptions.
