It’s not uncommon to hear fellow Canadians grumble about having to pay taxes or owe the government money, so it’s refreshing to occasionally see some of that money come back to our bank accounts. Surprisingly, millions of Canadians are not aware that they may have federal money just waiting for them.
According to new data obtained by Conservative finance critic Adam Chambers, billions of dollars remain uncashed by Canadians. In most cashes this is related to paper cheques that were mailed out over the past four years totaling over $2.1 billion. In all, 3.9 million paper cheques were sent out to Canadians as part of tax refunds, benefits, or even pension cheques.
The good news is that government cheques never expire and they can be replaced if need be. However, Canada Revenue Agency has been encouraging Canadians to sign up for direct deposit to make payments more timely and efficient.
For those wondering if they may have a payment waiting for them, Canadians are encouraged to log into their CRA account or call the agency at 1-800-959-8281.
