The Family Day long weekend will soon be here and that means Saskatchewanians will be allowed to fish for free the entire weekend without the need for a fishing license. This is one of only two weekends throughout the year where free fishing is permitted, the other being in the summer. It’s important to note that free fishing in our province is not permitted in National Parks and those who are from outside of the province must still have a fishing license.
Before venturing onto the ice in these warmer than normal temperatures, it’s important to be aware of ice thickness. According to experts with the Saskatchewan government, ice should be 30 centimeters (12 inches) or greater for an automobile, 8 centimeters for a snowmachine, and at least 4 centimeters for a human.
Over the years, Saskatchewan has earned a reputation for being a top fishing location in Canada including home to three world sport fishing records. The province is home to over 94,000 lakes with fish in at least 50,000 of those lakes. 69 species of fish call Saskatchewan home and 21 of those species are highly sought after by anglers. As temperatures begin to warm up, ice fisherman south of highway 16 are reminded to have their ice fishing shacks removed from lakes by March 15th. Those north of highway 16 will have until March 30th to have shacks removed.
Those aged 16 and older wishing to buy a fishing license can purchase them at any angling license issuer in the province, through one’s HAL account, or by phone at 1-855-848-4773. CLICK HERE for the various prices.
The free fishing weekend runs February 14 to 16.
