The Yorkton Terriers stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 5–1 victory over the Weyburn Red Wings on Wednesday, moving four points clear atop the SJHL’s Bunge Division.
Yorkton struck first 6:13 into the opening period when Ryder McDonald finished a sharp passing sequence for his eighth of the season. The lead grew soon after as Jye Zawatsky banked one in from just outside the crease for his 22nd, making it 2–0.
Weyburn answered 1:49 later, with Josh Sale converting on a strong individual effort for his 18th to cut the deficit to 2–1. But the Terriers restored their cushion before intermission. Zawatsky’s backhand was denied, but William Leonard snapped home the rebound for his team-leading 28th, sliding it through the five-hole of Joey Rocha to send Yorkton into the break up 3–1.
The Terriers added again in the second. Thomas Ries led the rush and put a puck on net, and Aidan Vallance cleaned up the rebound for his 10th of the year, extending the lead to 4–1 after two.
Gabriel Courchesne rounded out the scoring in the third, knocking in a loose puck for his 27th.
Callum Creig turned aside 28 of 29 shots for his league-best 21st win, while Rocha made 31 saves in the loss.
Yorkton is back on home ice Friday night against the Warman Wolverines at Westland Insurance Arena.
Elsewhere in the SJHL, the Melfort Mustangs picked up their third straight win, beating the Estevan Bruins 4-1.
Zayden Sadlemyer, Noel Englot, Kaleb Binner and Darren Hunt scored for Melfort, which moved within three points of a playoff spot. Rylan Williams had the lone goal, short-handed, for the Bruins, who dropped their eighth straight.
Kasen Kobelka stopped 23 of 24 shots in the win.
