REGINA — The major snowstorm and high winds impacting Saskatchewan have resulted in numerous flight cancellations out of both Regina and Saskatoon airports.
Regina International Airport (YQR) saw two WestJet flights to Calgary cancelled on Tuesday and a host of cancellations for Wednesday, with WestJet flights to Calgary, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Punta Cana cancelled and two Air Canada flights to Toronto also cancelled.
There were also nine other flights experiencing delays, according to YQR. However, most of YQR's afternoon departures are listed as on time.
In speaking to SaskToday, YQR spokesperson Kyla Antonini said that the "team is working nonstop to clear the runways as best they can. Visibility isn't bad now but there's still a lot of snow out there."
She said they had seen a lot of delays and cancellations, but they still had flights depart including an early morning Toronto flight.
"Passengers should check with their airline before coming to the airport for the most up to date information. If they're already here we've got lots of comfortable seating, great amenities and everything they need to make themselves as comfortable as possible as they wait out the snow and get on their way."
Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker Airport (YXE) was also seeing a host of delays or cancellations during the height of the snowstorm, with six WestJet departures to Calgary, Winnipeg, and Toronto and one Air Canada flight to Toronto cancelled while two other flights were reported as delayed as of this morning.
However, the situation has improved at the airport. In a statement from YXE, the airport reports conditions at the airport are currently good, and that although they saw several cancellations yesterday due to poor weather across the Prairies, they only had one new cancellation this morning, that being AC1931 from Toronto.
YXE also reports airport operations are currently normal, and they are not showing any further cancellations or significant delays due to weather. They add that weather in the east may impact certain flights as the day progresses, and advise passengers to check the status of their flight directly with their airline before proceeding to the airport.
