Farmers pitch in to help Berkan family with harvest

A group of farmers are gathering at one Saskatchewan farm to complete harvest of 14 quarters of land.

About 30 to 40 farmers in the Southey area are helping the Berkan family after Trevor Berkan passed away at the age of 41, leaving behind a wife and four kids, as well as unharvested land.

Dan Zurowski, who is organizing this event, said since harvest has become delayed his year, it’s important the crop gets off the ground this weekend.

“A bunch of us are taking time out of our schedules to help make their lives a little better,” said Zurowski. “With how the weather has been going this year, harvest is behind.”

It has been a difficult harvest season in southern Saskatchewan, and the tragedy of losing a member of their family at this busy time of the year inspired Zurowski and others to lend a hand.

He said it shows the spirit of small towns in Saskatchewan is still alive and well. “The way the community is pulling together for this family, you wonder if they still have the good ol’ fashioned sense of values, and this is proving to me that they still do.”

The farmers will need fuel to keep 15 combines and several other grain trucks running. People are encouraged to donate funds for fuel. Information is below.
