Protein Industries Canada reaches deal to produce peas and hemp for food processing

Regina-based Protein Industries Canada has outlined a $5 million agreement to develop improved pea and hemp varieties for Saskatchewan farmers.

CEO Bill Gruel says Protein Industries Canada has reached a deal with 4 companies to develop new pea and hemp varieties for use in food processing.

Gruel of Regina says the group will develop new high protein varieties of pea and hemp for use in new beverages and meat substitutes.

Gruel expects it will take 5 years to see new pea and hemp protein products on store shelves.
