Bruce Cowie passes away

A man, who spent his entire career in broadcasting, and was a big part of Harvard Broadcasting, the owners of 620 CKRM, has passed away.

Bruce Cowie began his lifelong passion with broadcasting working in Saskatoon radio in the 1950’s. After three years in the radio business, he made the switch to television, joining CKCK-TV, where he became a television icon to his Saskatchewan audience.

In 1972, Bruce became general manager of CKCK-TV. He has many held senior executive positions throughout his career with Harvard Broadcasting Inc., Baton Broadcasting Incorporated, Electrohome Limited, rising to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CTV Inc., just to name a few. Over the past ten years, Bruce’s main focus has been taking on a leadership role in the development of a highly successful Western radio group.

Bruce was also a devoted Riders fan, and was involved with the team for many years. He served as a member of the management committee, and was President between 1976 and 1978. Bruce is also a member of the Saskatchewan Roughrider Plaza of Honour.

Paul Hill, the president and CEO of the Hill Companies which includes Harvard Broadcasting, says it feels like he lost his best friend and that Cowie was a man who loved the community and the Riders.

“He was involved with many groups, he was president of the Riders and when we owned CTV Regina, we did several events that were essential for the Riders survival in those days.” Hill said. “Everybody loved him, everyone who worked with him loved him. He was just a terrific guy.”
