New project announced to use prairie pea and canola protein for seafood substitutes

Regina-based Protein Industries Canada has announced a multi-million dollar project to turn prairie crops into seafood alternatives.

Protein Industries chief techical officer Meghan Gervais says three B.C.-based food companies are involved in the research and development of using peas and canola protein as a substitute for traditional seafood.

Gervais says Protein Industries Canada is providing 5.5 million dollars for the 15 million dollar project.

Protein Industries Canada says more than 20 plant-based seafood alternatives will soon be in Canadian grocery store freezer aisles.
