One Measles Case in Saskatchewan, but more cases in Quebec, Ontario and BC

Measles, a childhood malady with potential fatal consequences, is starting to rear its head in Canada.

There was one positive case in Saskatchewan, and multiple cases in Quebec.

That case was detected late last year by someone from Saskatchewan travelling internationally.

While measles had been eradicated in Canada through immunizing children, its possible for someone from outside of the country to come to Canada, and not have a vaccination for measles. Measles can spread easily to groups of people who are not vaccinated and cause an outbreak or can infect those who are most vulnerable and unable to be vaccinated

The Saskatchewan Ministry of health is aware of this, and is furnishing some information for the public.

Symptoms include fever, red runny eyes, runny nose, and cough followed by a red rash that starts on the face and then moves to the rest of the body.

In a statement to Harvard Media News, the Ministry of Health says “The Saskatchewan Health Authority and Ministry of Health are monitoring closely for additional measles cases after a Saskatoon resident acquired the virus through international travel earlier this winter. At this time, no new cases have been detected.”

The Ministry of Health suggests people make sure their immunization records are up to date, especially before travelling.
