Fires, ice, drought, wind, and hail really dominated the weather headlines in 2025. Environment Canada has compiled their list of the top ten biggest weather stories of the past year and it was a particularly hard year for Saskatchewan residents. The province was one of the hardest hit wildfire locations in the country and farmers in the west central region dealt with a massive hail storm in August causing significant crop damage.

9: The powerful Nor’easter storm that hit Newfoundland in November with powerful wind gusts.

8: The Arctic Ocean storm surge which flooded Tuktoyaktuk.

7: The August storm that brought massive hail and damage to Brooks, AB, west central Saskatchewan, and Langham.

6: The massive snowstorms of eastern Canada from Ontario to Labrador, which started in February.

5: The Ice Storm of Ontario in March, destroying power lines and causing outages in Ontario and Quebec.

4: The May heatwave and wildfires of Manitoba, which forced thousands to flee their homes.

3: A destructive storm that struck eastern Ontario causing flooding, washed out roads, and wind damage.

2: Drought, which affected nearly all provinces, especially parts of southwest and west-central Saskatchewan causing some rural municipalities to declare states of emergency.

1: The wildfires. It was the second worst year on record for wildfires. An estimated 75,000 people were forced from their homes. Saskatchewan and Manitoba were among the hardest hit this year.
