January can always be a very unpredictable month weatherwise. We’ve had Januarys were that have been very nice and Januarys that will live on folklore for years as being the coldest and snowiest ever. It seems January 2026 is shaping up to be a month where Mother Nature can’t decide if it’s going to be warm or cold thanks to a mild stretch of weather.
According to the weather experts at the Weather Network, enjoy the nice weather while it lasts because it’s about to change later this month, feeling much more like January. Meteorologists are saying the second half of the month will be considerably cooler thanks to cold northern air sliding in over the prairies. In fact, they predict the rest of January will feel as cold as what December did from the Rocky Mountains eastward. Their January forecast did not provide details as to possible snowfall amounts, if any, across western Canada.
Looking ahead to the 14-day weather forecast for Regina and southern Saskatchewan, it appears the nice temperatures will be sticking around for a few more days. Today we’re expected to reach +2 degrees, 0 on Thursday, a drop to -10 on Friday and then temperatures between -13 and -4 are possible next week. The cold weather appears to return on January 23rd where highs are -19 and colder. The normal high for this time of year is around -11, while the normal low is -23, however the latter half of January is expected to be below the normal temps.
Weather experts are waiting to see if this January will be one of the warmest on record, especially in Alberta where temperatures have been very mild for this time of year. Today, Lethbridge could see their mercury rise up to 18 Celsius or more while Medicine Hat is looking at 13C and Pincher Creek could see 15. The last time Lethbridge reached 20 in January was back in 2015, which means if they do reach that temperature today, the Weather Network says it’ll be the first 20C in Canada this winter.
