REGINA–Saskatchewan RCMP are warning drivers to stay off the roads today as winter weather continues to create dangerous conditions across central and southern parts of the province.
Mounties are currently on scene at a multi‑vehicle pile‑up near the intersection of Highway 46 and Highway 1, southwest of Balgonie. Highway 46 is closed for an undetermined amount of time, and several other highways in the Regina region are also shut down. Officials say travel in the area is not recommended as conditions continue to deteriorate.
Officers are also responding to another collision on Highway 10, south of the Highway 364 junction near Edgeley. Along with those major incidents, police are receiving numerous reports of vehicles sliding into the ditch throughout the southern part of the province.
RCMP say a combination of ice, snow‑covered lanes, drifting and blowing snow, road closures, and strong winds is making travel extremely challenging. Visibility in some areas is poor and changing rapidly as gusts push snow across the roadways.
Police are urging anyone planning to travel to check weather forecasts and road conditions before heading out. If poor conditions exist—or are expected—drivers are encouraged to delay travel whenever possible. For those who must be on the road, RCMP say to stay on routes that have been recently plowed or treated by highway crews.
The province’s Highway Hotline map, available at hotline.gov.sk.ca/map, allows travellers to see real‑time information on road conditions and view which highways have been plowed, salted, or sanded within the past two hours.
RCMP are also reminding the public not to call 911 or local detachments for road updates. Emergency lines must remain open for life‑threatening situations, and non‑emergency calls could delay critical help reaching someone who needs it.
More updates will be provided as information becomes available.
