Back in 1969 the world was captivated as Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong stepped onto the surface marking a major moment in human history. Since 1969, astronauts have made several more trips to the moon (six in total) to learn more about our closest celestial body, however tourism development of the moon wasn’t on their minds all those years ago. The past two years has not only seen renewed interest in returning to the moon by entrepreneurs, but what it would take to start housing guests on its surface.
A start-up company from California is now taking bookings for a moon hotel, but interested customers will have to be very wealthy. The entrepreneur behind the deal is 21-year-old Skylar Chan who has big plans to have a hotel built on the moon by 2032, which sounds like a long time from today but really it’s only six years away.
No details on the the entire round trip cost, however the young man estimates a room will set a person back $10 million. To help cushion the costs, he’s taking deposits of $250,000 and $1 million leading up to his dream of hotel construction on the moon. For that cost, guests better be allowed to swipe the little soaps and shampoos!
According to the company, hotel construction will take place on the moon using bricks made of moon soil, reducing the need to ship materials to the lunar surface. Because of the harsh surface, the company expects to use robotic technology to aid in the construction starting as early as 2029.
