The City of Regina will once again be releasing thousands of ladybugs this summer as part of its plan to control aphids across the city.
On Thursday, July 9th over 200,000 ladybugs will be given to children and adults for release in yards or nearby parks. The event is free to attend and it gives children the opportunity to learn about the importance of ladybugs in nature and how they control aphids, which can damage plants and trees if unchecked. According to experts, one ladybug can eat as many 2,400 aphids in its lifetime.
A sure sign you have aphids in your yard is by the amount of aphid “honeydew” on the windshield of your vehicle if parked under a tree. The gooey sap-like substance may appear on the windshield of your car and can attract wasps and ants. Ladybugs will consume adult aphids while their larvae will eat the aphid honeydew, plant bugs, and other caterpillars.
Those wanting ladybugs for their yard or favourite park can attend the ladybug release party at Victoria Park on Thursday, July 9th from 9:30am to 11am. There will be giveaways that morning, face painting, games, and family activities, along with thousands of ladybugs while supplies last.
The City of Regina says free transit will be provided to those going to the event. The City asks that you tell the driver you’re headed to Victoria Park for the the ladybug release to get the free ride.
