Still time to enjoy some of the best events of late Summer, but you’ll have to travel West for this one.
Just south of Calgary or it used to be, lies Spruce Meadows. If you are an equestrian or a lover of horses this is an event you do not want to miss. This year might just be the best with a very special guest coming for the Masters, which begin this week. September 9th through to the 13th Spruce Meadows brings the best of the best to the International Ring, where the world’s best horse and rider tandems will compete.
For a nominal admission and free parking you can wander the grounds through the day and enjoy shopping, food and beverages and various other activities. When I lived just out side of the Spruce Meadows area, it was a treat to go and take it all in. This year it would be wonderful to return for the Masters.
This upcoming weekend is filled with reasons to enjoy including the #1 and 2 positions.
#1. His Majesty’s Band of the Welsh Guards. This is the exact band whose official duties include the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Friday’s Evening of the Horse will include the Welsh Guards playing live and fireworks overhead. Check the Spruce Meadows Website for actual times during the Masters.
#2. The Celle Stallions bring centuries of horsemanship, tradition and precision to the Masters all the way from Germany. The history of these horses goes back to 1735.
#3. The Strathcona Mounted Troop offers 20 horses performing a precision musical ride movements, tent pegging and a chance to meet horse & rider.
#4. The Diamond Willow Vaulting Club, something to marvel, the athleticism of horse and rider.
And you can’t forget, and I will say again – the shopping, the food and beverage plus the main attraction of world class show jumping and the horse’s companion – dogs!!
If you can work it into your busy schedule, its a great change of pace and worth the trip.
