Arriving with the 620 CKRM Country Cookout crew into the beautiful district of Earl Grey reminds you exactly why this province has the biggest heart. There is something truly unmatched about the community spirit. It’s a place built on generation after generation of hard work, unshakeable resilience, and the kind of good old-fashioned neighborly bonds that keep small-town Saskatchewan thriving.
The history of the village of Earl Grey, began in 1901 when the area was first settled by Paul Henderson, the younger brother of Louis Riel’s hangman. Following Henderson’s tragic death from exposure in 1903, a steady wave of homesteaders arrived to establish a community near the Qu’Appelle Valley. By July 27, 1906, the settlement was officially incorporated as a village. It was named “Earl Grey” at the suggestion of a Canadian Pacific Railway official to honor Albert Grey, the 4th Earl Grey, who was serving as Canada’s Governor General and is famously known for donating football’s Grey Cup. Like many early prairie towns, Earl Grey’s economy revolved around a thriving grain market, which is commemorated today by a small replica statue of a grain elevator in the downtown area. Though its public school closed in 2007, the village endures today as a resilient, close-knit rural community located just 67 kilometers north of Regina.
