A near capacity crowd filled Darke Hall Monday night to watch Heartstings and Honkytonks featuring several prominent Canadian musicans. The event started at 7pm and was hosted by Cody Glydon and Gloria Evans in Darke Hall and live on 620 CKRM as part of the year long 100th anniversary celebration of the radio station.
“We wanted to do something that was unique,”noted singer Clayton Bellamy. “I’ve been able to play the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville as well as the Grand Ole Opry a number of times (and) we wanted to take a piece from each one of those stories, put it together, and make a unique experience and that’s what Heartstrings and Honkytonks is. It brings the live radio broadcast experience of the Grand Ole Opry and it brings the intimate songwriters/storytelling experience of the Bluebird Cafe.”
The show included music from Saskatchewan’s Kalsey Kulyk, who was surprised with news at the CCMA’s that she’ll be performing at the Grand Ole Opry. Dan Davidson, Michelle Wright, Clayton Bellamy, the Johner Brothers, Evan Baxter, and surprise guest Jason McCoy all performed throughout the evening. CCMA award winners Amber Bauer and Matty McKay formed the rest of the band.
