Statistics Canada has released their list of the most popular baby names from the past year. Most of these babies were born in 2025 and after nine years as number one, Olivia is no longer the most popular name.
In 2025, Charlotte took the top spot for girls with 1,502 girls getting the name followed by Olivia in second with 1,445. The third most popular name for girls was Emma, followed by Sophia and then Amelia rounding out the top five. Other girls names to make the top ten included Sofia (different spelling), Chloe, Mia, Lily, and Nora, which reached the top ten for the first time.
As for the boys, Noah took the top spot for a fifth straight year with 2,190 kids getting that name. The second most popular name for boys was Theodore with 1,629 receiving the name in 2025 followed by Liam at 1,468. Leo came in fourth while William was fifth. Oliver, Jack, Benjamin, Thomas, and Lucas were also in the top ten.
According to Stats Canada, the country’s fertility rate remains low at 1.26 children per woman, which is part of a trend for high-income countries. South Korea has the lowest fertility rate of 0.8 children per woman. The average age for mothers at childbirth reached 31.9 which is a big change from 1976 when the average age was 26.7.
