Recently, Dictionary.com released their annual word of the year selection which was “maxxing,” meaning to maximize a certain part of your life to the fullest.
Collins Dictionary disagrees with Dictionary.com. According to their stats, the word of the year is “mogging.” This is a word that has gained a lot of steam over the past 12 months and it means to outperform or outshine someone or something. The term started out as Gen-Z slang, but over time has become part of mainstream language amongst young people.
Other words that were trending over the past year, according to Collins Dictionary, included “bixie,” which is a hairstyle shorter than a bob, but longer than a pixie cut.
“Carspreading” was trending this year and is defined as car makers who tend to build vehicles are that longer, wider, and heavier.
“Firewave” means a series of fires in a short period of time in urban areas. “Fricy” also made the trending list in 2026. It’s defined as food that is both fruity and spicy at the same time.
The Oxford and Merriam-Webster Dictionaries have yet to release their word of the year for 2026, however expect their lists in the coming weeks.
