Sask dairy farmers to receive 10 million dollars in federal compensation

The federal government has announced 1.75 billion dollars for almost 11 thousand dairy Canadian farmers over the next 8 years.

The money is compensation for the new TPP and European trade agreements.

In the first year, dairy farmers will get 345 million dollars in direct payments in proportion to their dairy quota.

The policy manager for SaskMilk, Joy Smith, says the 165 dairy farmers In Saskatchewan will receive about 10 million dollars this year.

Saskatchewan represents about 2.9 percent of the Canadian dairy market.

For example, an 80 cow operation will receive a payment of 28 thousand dollars in the first year.

Terms and conditions for future years will be worked out with the Dairy Farmers of Canada.

Smith says the support is welcome news and is based on a mathematical formula for market share loss.
